Theater History

The Lyric Theatre opened in 1998 and is operated by the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG). It was built by combining two prior theaters, the Lyric Theatre and the Apollo Theatre, and it is currently home to the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Recent productions include On the Town, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, Young Frankenstein, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Ragtime.

Yes! The original London production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was nominated for a record-breaking 11 Olivier Awards, and won a record-breaking 9 Olivier Awards, including Best Play, Best Director (John Tiffany), Best Actor (Jamie Parker as Harry Potter), and Best Actress and Actor in a Supporting Role (Noma Dumezweni as Herminoe Granger & Anthony Boyle as Scorpis Malfoy respectively.)The London Production also won Best Play at the Evening Standard Awards and the WhatsOnStage Awards. 

 

The Original Broadway Production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won 6, including Best Play. The Broadway production also won the Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Drama League Award for Best Play, along with a Grammy Nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album produced and composed by Imogen Heap.

There is not a traditional cast recording as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play and not a broadway musical - however there is still a Grammy nominated original score that will bring the magic to life wherever you go! You can purchase a CD here, or listen to it on streaming!

Yes! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is playing all around the world, not just at the Lyric Theatre in New York City! The US National Tour will begin in Chicago in September 2024, for more dates and for the North American tour here, including information on future productions at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, and The National Theatre in Washington, DC! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is also playing in LondonHamburg, and Tokyo

 

Is There a Nearby Restaurant? 

There are plenty of pre and post show dining options. For nearby fast casual dining, check out Schnipper’s (620 8th Ave), or Los Taco No. 1 (229 W. 43rd). A couple blocks away are theater patron staples such as Carmine’s, Sardi’s (both on 44th between 8th and 9th Ave) or right across Shubert Alley on West 45th you’ll find Junior’s. Or you can check out Restaurant Row on 46th Street between 8th and 9th Ave. All of these options are very near the Lyric Theatre. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child also offers a magical array of concessions from traditional theater concessions to Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans - and you can wash it all down with a cold Butterbeer! 

 

What else should I know? 

In 2013, JK Rowling announced that a stage play based in the Harry Potter world was in development. In 2015, the play was announced that it would be set 19 years after deathly hallows and premiere in London in July 2016. JK Rowling conceived the story for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child with playwright Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany. The original cast featured Jamie Parker as Harry Potter, Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger, Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley, Poppy Miller as Ginny Potter, Alex Price as Draco Malfoy, Sam Clemmett as Albus Severus Potter, and Anthony Boyle as Scorpius Malfoy - who all reprised their roles when the production transferred to the Lyric Theatre in New York and opened on Broadway in 2018. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has also had productions in San Francisco, USA, Melbourne, Australia, and Toronto, Canada. 

 

Originally written as two parts to be seen over two subsequent performances, it was shortened to one part after the covid pandemic. The only production still in its original 2 part format is in London.

 

Currently, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the 5th longest running straight play in Broadway History! 

 

Who Should See  Harry Potter and the Cursed Child?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is recommended for ages 8 and up. Children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the Lyric Theatre and children 15 and under will not be admitted without an adult.

RULES & REGULATIONS

When to arrive: Doors open roughly a half hour before showtime. Give yourself plenty of time to pick up tickets and find your seats. What to wear: Whatever makes you comfortable! Some people dress up for the theater, but there is no official dress code. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theater.
