Theater History

Originally named the Forrest Theatre when it opened in 1925 after Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest, it was renamed the Coronet Theatre in 1945 when it was sold to City Playhouse Theatres. Producer Lester Osterman bought the theater in 1959 and named it after the acclaimed playwright Eugene O'Neill, whose plays include Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Iceman Cometh, and Ah, Wilderness! Operated by Jujamcyn Theaters, recent productions in the theater include The Book of Mormon, 8, Fela!, 33 Variations, Spring Awakening, and Sweeney Todd.

From the creators of South Park and the co-creator of Avenue Q comes the funniest musical Broadway has ever seen! 

 

The nine time Tony Award winning Best Musical The Book of Mormon follows two missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who are sent to Uganda to help spread the good word and convert the citizens to mormonism. The polar opposite duo quickly learn that their mission is nothing like they expected. This musical has been running on Broadway since 2011 and has become one of the biggest hits in history. 

 

The Book of Mormon features a book, music, and lyrics by Trey Parker, Matt Stone & Robert Lopez. Parker and Stone are the Emmy winning creators of South Park. Lopez is the double EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) who has written the music of Avenue Q, Frozen, Coco, and WandaVision. 

 

The Book of Mormon is co-directed by Tony Award Winners Trey Parker and Casey Nicholaw, who also choreographs the show.

What else should I know? 

The Book of Mormon premiered on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on March 24, 2011. The production starred Andrew Rannells as Elder Price, Josh Gad as Elder Cunningham, Nikki M. James as Nabulungi, Rory O’Malley as Elder McKinley, Michael Potts as Mafala Hatimbi, Brian Tyree Henry as The General, and Lewis Cleale as Joseph Smith. 

 

The Book of Mormon featured set design by Scott Pask, costumes by Ann Roth, lighting by Brain MacDevitt, sound by Brian Ronan, and orchestrations by Larry Hochman and Stephen Oremus (who also served as the musical director). 

 

The Book of Mormon quickly became a smash hit, breaking weekly sales records 22 times in its first year. The production won 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score for Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez, Best Direction for Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker, and Best Performance by a Featured Actress for Nikki M. James. 

 

It has since played over 4,900 performances on Broadway becoming one of the longest running shows of all time and has played all over the country and the world!

Wheelchair accessible seating is located in the orchestra section. No steps to designated seating location.

Is there a wheelchair accessible restroom available?

No. The Eugene O'Neill does not have an elevator - an accessible restroom is available to use in The Time Hotel next door at 224 West 49th Street. A staff member is happy to guide guests to the hotel.

Are there assistive devices available?

D-Scriptive devices, I-Caption devices, audio induction neck loops, and infrared headsets are available in the Orchestra Bar lobby. There is no charge, but a valid photo ID is required.

When to arrive: Doors open roughly a half hour before showtime. Give yourself plenty of time to pick up tickets and find your seats. What to wear: Whatever makes you comfortable! Some people dress up for the theater, but there is no official dress code. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theater.
