Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film comes alive on stage at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Set in Paris, France at the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! tells the story of Christian, a poor young writer who falls in love with Satine, an actress and star of the Moulin Rouge.
Like the film, Moulin Rouge! weaves together original songs and popular music and features songs from the movie like “Your Song,” “Come What May,” and “Lady Marmalade,” along with over 40 songs written since the film’s 2001 release including “We Are Young,” “Single Ladies,” “Firework,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “Bad Romance,” “Rolling in the Deep,” and many, many more!
Moulin Rouge! is directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh and features a book by three time Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner John Logan based on the story by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.
The production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards and won ten, the most of any show that year. Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, in the roles made famous by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in the film, were both nominated, with Aaron Tveit winning the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Danny Burstein also won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.
